What We Do

About Us

Welcome to Urban Health Group

Our mission is to inspire a fundamental shift in thinking away from the treatment of illness and towards the creation of wellness and vitality through chiropractic, massage therapy, holistic healthcare, lifestyle education and personal empowerment.

Since 1984 our seasoned practitioners have aimed to aid patients in their quest for optimum health.

Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy that is concerned with the nervous system and its effects on the overall health of the body. Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and process in your body.

Each vertebrae in your spine corresponds with separate nerves that send information from your brain to various parts of your body.  If there is  interference at the level of your spine, then the nerves that pass through that area will be unable to properly transmit information to the respective parts of your body.

Our chiropractors detect and remove subluxations (a problem in the spine where an abnormal position/ movement of a vertebrae disturbs communication within the nervous system causing suboptimal function in the body). Using the Insight Millennium Nervous System scanning technology, our Doctors can see precisely where there are disturbances in your nervous system, problems that cannot be seen on an x-ray. By rescanning your nervous system every 12 – 24 visits, the doctors can monitor your progress.

Correcting these subluxations is necessary for optimum health in your body.  To do this, our Chiropractors perform adjustments.  An adjustment is a precise, careful set of movements applied to the muscles and joints of your spine that allows it  to return to its proper position and normal range of movement.

Insight Millennium

Your nervous system is the epicenter of your health.  At Urban Health Group, we use sophisticated technology that can easily measure interference to your nervous system.

The Insight Millennium uses two revolutionary systems, the Thermal scan and a Surface EMG (Electromyogram) that measure the different aspects of the nervous system.  The results are measured with a color scale (shown below) that indicates to what degree there are interferences in your nervous system.

= Mild         = Moderate         = Severe         = Off the Chart

So what does the Insight Millennium measure?

Thermal Scan:  The thermal scan measures the temperature of your skin on each side of the spine from your tailbone to your head.  Any differences in temperature from one side to the other show up on the printout.  If your nervous system causes your capillaries to expand, then more blood circulates and the temperature of the skin goes up.  If the nervous system tells these capillaries to constrict, then less blood flows and the temperature of the skin drops.  If one side is a different temperature than the other, this indicates some interference with the organ nerves.  Of even greater consequence is if the thermal pattern remains “stuck” over time.

The Surface EMG (Electromyogram) is the other part of the new technology.  Every time that a muscle contracts, it gives off a very small electrical signal.  This is what is picked up when you get an electrocardiogram for your heart.  The surface EMG scan is 1000 times more sensitive than an electrocardiogram.  At each level of the spine, the electrical signal is measured to see if there is too much or too little muscle contraction at any level.  It also checks to see if this level of muscle contraction is symmetrical on both sides of the spine.  Thousands of patients have been examined this way to determine what the normal amount of muscle tension is at every level of the spine.  Areas of imbalance indicate nerve interference to the muscle nerves mentioned above.

Putting it all together:

The combination of these two scans will give us the information we need to determine an individual’s treatment plan.  It also tells us how well you are progressing and what phase of care you are working on.  The four phases of care are:

  1. Addressing your health problem
  2. Strengthening and stabilizing the area to keep the problem from coming back
  3. Maintaining this stability
  4. Wellness – growing your health year after year through appropriate lifestyle choices

Approximately every 12-24 visits or sooner if you have a new stress or injury, we will perform a new scan of your nervous system.  We will compare each new scan with the previous ones to determine how best to move you to the next phase of care.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures in the world.  Acupuncture stimulates the body's ability to resist or overcome illnesses and conditions by correcting energy imbalances.

With acupuncture the practitioner uses thin needles on meridian points which are channels that chi flows through, within the body. Acupuncture points are the locations where the chi rises close to the surface of the body. A network of energy channels are created by the 12 main meridians which exist throughout the body.

In acupuncture, each meridian corresponds to a function or organ. The main meridian points are: kidney, the lung, stomach, gallbladder, spleen, , small intestine, large intestine, heart, gall bladder, urinary bladder, san jiao (three heater) and pericardium (heart protector/ or circulation meridian).

When Chi freely flows through the meridians, the body is healthy and balanced, but when the energy becomes stagnant, blocked or weakened, it can result in mental, physical, or emotional health problems. Imbalances can be caused for a variety of reasons, such as: excess anger, over-excitement. Environmental factors such as cold, damp/humidity, wind, and heat.  As well wrong diet, overwork and too much exercise can be culprits.

To restore balance, the acupuncturist stimulates the acupuncture points that will counteract that imbalance. In this way, acupuncture can effectively rebalance the energy system and restore health or prevent the development of disease.

Orthotics

Orthotics

Your feet are a complex system of 52 bones, 66 joints, 214 ligaments, 38 muscles and tendons. It is no wonder that 75% of North Americans will experience foot health problems of varying degrees, at some point in their lives.

It's important to understand your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body and support you with each step.  A small abnormality in foot function can have a large impact on joints higher up in the body, causing pain and discomfort.

Our Doctors prescribe Orthotics to their patients for various symptoms. Many medical conditions often stem from a biomechanical gait abnormality that can be treated with custom Orthotics.  Sometimes if you have chronic complications that will not subside with other modalities, it might be time to check your feet.

Our doctors use The Orthotic Group products.
