Chiropractic Care for Children

Children have Spines too!

I often get asked why parents might choose to have their babies and children under Chiropractic care. The answer is simple. Just like adults, children experience everyday stress on their spines. Some examples include the birth process (yes, even “normal” births put quite a bit of strain on your little one’s system!), learning to hold up their head, sitting, crawling, walking, running and of course, falling. As children continue to develop, sports and other activities also contribute to the list of potential spinal stressors. Cumulatively, these spinal stressors may result in structural changes to the spine.

The Spine and Nervous System Connection

The spinal bones house the spinal cord, which acts a relay for information between the brain and the body. Together, the brain, spinal cord and all of the body’s nerves make up the Nervous System. You can think of the Nervous System as the master controller of our bodies: it controls and coordinates the development and function of all the other systems in the body including the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune systems. Interference to the spine and nervous system may impact the overall health of adults and children alike.

Conditions and Symptoms… or not

One of the most common reasons that parents seek out Chiropractic care for their children is trauma from a fall or injury. Other parents seek Chiropractic care for the correction or resolution of a child’s symptoms or conditions. Common conditions that present to our office include earaches, difficulty latching or breastfeeding, favouring one side (eg. only turing to the left), and colic. Oftentimes, parents may chose to have their children assessed proactively, even if the child is not presenting with any symptoms. This is optimal! As I always discuss with adult patients, our bodies are very adaptable, and the absence of symptoms does not always equate to health. In most cases, spinal dysfunction is present for months or even years before symptoms actually occur.
